How it works

On screen, the user has a "sheet of paper" to write on.

The user may click on anything on this paper to start a search. The Wordfinder then displays a menu showing what it came up with. The menu is permanent, and it is easy to select items from it.

Sometimes the user does not recognize his word. In that case he just holds down the mouse button, and any menu item is spoken, as often as required. When satisfied, the user releases the button.

The original on his paper is automatically updated by the selected item.

Yak-Yak comes with the capability to find hundreds of thousands of words. You can enhance this vocabulary in a useful way, by producing a list of precisely those words, and phrases, which the user needs most. When the helper takes advantage of this tool, then the Wordfinder can find any of these items - almost no matter how the user writes them - with as good as 100% certainty.

For speech Yak-Yak uses Apple Computer's English speaking synthetic voices (see synthetic speech). Each voice can be set as the user prefers. For instance, it may be adjusted to speak slowly and distinctly. And you can, of course, make it repeat as many times as you wish.

Text being spoken is hilited, so that the user can read along. Both correctly spelled words and misspelled ones are spoken. This makes no-rules proof-reading possible, using just the spoken language.

Even someone with a severe disability can obtain amazingly good results by using Yak-Yak. The user knows what he intends to write. Yak-Yak helps him to find, and use the proper expression. And each time this works, his ability to use that expression increases.
